How To Dress For An Interview (for Men)

Posted by TSI February 28, 2010 – 10:23 AM

Interviews aren’t the time and place for an outrageous fashion statement. Wearing too much or too less may prove deadly. Follow these simple tips and prepare yourself for that dream job!

When Wearing a Suit

The color of your suit should be navy blue or charcoal gray. Dark brown suits are still acceptable but should be avoided. Light-colored suits shouldn’t be worn as they aren’t formal enough. Black suits on the other are plenty formal but are too flashy. Pin stripes are permissible, but only if they are fine. A two or three-buttoned, two-piece suit is good enough for an interview.

When Wearing Shirt and Tie

If you prefer wearing shirts and ties, white shirts are generally the safest and most conservative. Pale-blue or light almond shirts are also acceptable as long as they are plain and solid. Point collars are the best for an interview. Avoid shirts with shiny finish such as rayon. Shirts should be 100% cotton.

Wear a tie between 2 ¾ and 3 ½ inches wide. Never wear the Sponge-Bob-Square-Pants-print type of tie. Windsor knots are generally preferred at job interviews as they are arguably the most conservative. Four-in-hand knots are fine as well. Knots should be neat and fit within the space created by your choice of collar.

Pants

Don’t wear pants which are too fit or too lose. War something that will match you suit or your shirt. Black pants are the best to wear whether you are wearing a suit or a shirt.

Shoes and Belt

When going to an interview, black shoes are the best to wear. Black shoes is the most recommended as they match perfectly to almost any suit and shirt.

Your belt must always match the color of your shoes. Don’t wear belts with large shiny buckles.

Miscellaneous

You should wear a dark pair of socks which are long enough that no one can see your legs when you are seated. Remove all your jewelry when going to an interview. Only wedding rings are permissible. Your hair must be clean, neat and simple. Shorter hair is best to have. Facial hair is not advised but well groomed mustaches are somehow acceptable. Don’t wear too much cologne. A little is enough or none at all.
